Blanketed in Bauhaus - A unique collaboration brings shapes to drapable throws.

In recent years, Aspen has solified its position on the international scene as one of the leading art destinations in the world. But its high-brow reputation has roots dating back to 1949, with the start of one of design’s great movements—the Bauhaus. Now, it’s all coming full circle with a worldwide celebration to mark the modernist art school’s 100th anniversary in 2019. Locally, there is a slew of special events planned (bauhaus100aspen.org), but ahead of social festivities, you can shop for one of the most beautiful keepsakes we’ve seen yet.

Michaela Carpenter, founder and creative director of Maker—an innovative retail concept selling handcrafted home wares from around the world amid a bustling cafe— collaborated with Basalt-based Hangai Mountain Textiles to design a line of strictly geometric cashmere throws.A designer and self-proclaimed Bauhaus devotee, as proven by the logo tribute tattooed on her leg, Carpenter graduated from London’s Chelsea College of Arts in 2017, where she studied weaving. Working closely with Hangai Mountain Textiles owners Betina and Bill Infante, whose throws she had already stocked in-store, Carpenter says she “painted with yarn” to create four colorways in the Bauhaus Collection using the company’s rare cashmere sourced from Mongolia.

Carpenter will also host a Bauhaus Night to talk about the role of women in the famed Bauhaus weaving workshop, along with a trunk show Dec. 20. From $650, 614 E. Cooper Ave., 970.379.8130,  makerandplace.com
