Earth Day Tribute

Mongolia’s vast steppes and alpine meadows support herds that have sustained families, culture and tradition for centuries. Living and working in Mongolia for two decades, we at Hangai Mountain Textiles understand the complex interaction between responsible resource stewardship and development.
As pressures build on Mongolia’s grasslands we encourage practices that help preserve ecosystems. Our passion is yak fiber which is hand-harvested each spring from animals that are relatively light on the land. It is comparable in warmth and softness to cashmere, but is all-natural - unbleached, undyed and naturally hypoallergenic.
Diversity in herds is good for the earth. When coupled with fiber traceability, a key to sustainability, and age-old practices such as herd-size management and rotational grazing, the grasslands can be preserved, and in turn, so can nomadic culture.
From herders to your home, Hangai’s knits and woven throws are made exclusively in Mongolia. On Earth Day we salute the herders and their families who anchor Mongolia’s history and culture to the land, and who are critical to preserving the grassy steppes.
